Sphynx cats, due to their increased water loss, may be more susceptible to these conditions if their hydration needs are not met (Feline Kidney Disease, 2010).

Sources of Hydration for Sphynx Cats

1. Wet Food: Wet food is an excellent source of hydration because it contains around 70-80% water, which helps cats meet their daily water intake. For Sphynx cats, wet food is especially beneficial in preventing dehydration. Studies have shown that feeding wet food can help cats maintain adequate hydration levels, reducing the risks associated with kidney and urinary problems (Pierson, 2015).
2. Fresh Water: Access to clean, fresh water is vital for any cat. Sphynx cats, particularly, benefit from having fresh water available at all times due to their increased need for fluid.
3. Other Hydration Sources: Cats may also get hydration from other sources, including raw food, broths, fresh fruits (like watermelon or cantaloupe), and treats with high moisture content. These can contribute to the total daily hydration, reducing the amount of water the cat needs to drink directly.

The calculator uses a higher hydration recommendation for Sphynx cats—60 mL per kg of body weight per day, which is higher than the average cat’s requirement of 50 mL per kg—taking into account their increased metabolic rate and higher fluid loss through skin evaporation.
2. Wet Food Amount and Moisture %: Many cats receive moisture from wet food, which contains significant water content (typically around 70-80% moisture). The calculator considers this moisture contribution when determining how much additional water is needed. The moisture content of wet food can usually be found on the product label, often under the section labeled “Moisture” or “Crude Moisture.” This percentage is then used to calculate how much water the wet food provides towards your cat’s daily hydration needs.
3. Other Hydration Source Amount and Moisture %: Cats may also receive hydration from other sources such as raw food, broth, fresh vegetables, or moist treats. These can further contribute to their overall hydration. The calculator allows owners to input the amount and moisture content of any other hydration sources to more accurately estimate the remaining amount of water needed. It may take some searching to find out the moisture content of some foods, but treats and commercially prepared raw food should have the moisture content on the product label. 

The calculator then subtracts the moisture provided by wet food and other hydration sources from the total daily water intake required and shows the remaining amount of water the cat needs to consume directly.
