Sphynx cats are known for their unique hairless look—but no fur doesn’t mean no grooming! In fact, their skin requires regular upkeep to stay clean and healthy. Because they don’t have fur to absorb natural oils, Sphynx cats can develop oily buildup, skin irritation, or acne if not bathed regularly.

Whether you’re a new Sphynx owner or just need a refresher, here are the do’s and don’ts of Sphynx cat bath time.

✅ DO: Bathe Regularly (But Not Too Often)

Sphynx cats usually need a bath every couple weeks to every couple months depending on how quickly they get oily. Keeping to a routine helps prevent grime buildup and keeps their skin clear.

✅ DO: Keep Baths short and Stress free (especially when first introducing them)

The first few baths should not be about cleaning, but about slowing getting your kitten used to being in the water. Keep the first few baths short, calm, and let them explore. Try bringing a squeezable treat to distract them if they are thinking of escaping, but if they are done…let them be done and try another water play time another day.

✅ DO: Use Gentle, Hypoallergenic Shampoo

Use a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic shampoo made for cats or sensitive skin. Avoid human or dog shampoos—they can irritate your cat’s skin and throw off its natural balance. We have had great success with Burt’s Bees cat/kitten shampoos.

✅ DO: Prep the Space Before You Start

Have everything ready:

  • Lukewarm water (not too hot!)
  • Cat-safe shampoo
  • Towels
  • A cup or quiet and gentle handheld sprayer
  • Optional: cotton balls for ears
  • Floaty toys
  • A treat like Churu to keep them occupied and to reward them afterwards

Filling the tub or sink before bringing in your cat helps reduce stress.

✅ DO: Keep the Room Warm

Sphynx cats get cold easily, especially when wet. Make sure the room is cozy, and wrap them up right after the bath.

✅ DO: Be Gentle But Thorough

Use your hands or a soft washcloth to gently scrub oily areas like:

  • Behind the ears
  • Under the arms
  • Neck folds
  • Between toes

Rinse completely—leftover soap can cause skin irritation.

Note: you can also use exfoliating gloves but be careful that they aren’t too scratchy and that they are used carefully. Rubbing too firmly or too long in one spot can cause a raw spot.

✅ DO: Dry Them Completely

Pat them down with a soft towel, especially in folds and creases. Avoid hair dryers unless they’re on low heat and your cat is already used to the noise.

✅ DO: Protect Their Ears

Sphynx cats are prone to ear infections because they have no fur inside their ears and produce more earwax.

To avoid water in the ears:

  • Don’t pour water over the head
  • Use a washcloth for the face
  • Angle their head away when rinsing
  • Gently hold ears down
  • Optionally place dry cotton balls in the ears (if tolerated)

After the bath, use a cotton pad to wipe around (not inside) the ears with a vet-approved ear cleaner.

DON’T: Overdo the Baths

More is not better! Overbathing can strip natural oils and lead to dry, irritated skin. Stick to a regular schedule based on your cat’s needs.

DON’T: Forget the Details

Don’t skip the small areas—like nails, ears, and skin folds. These places collect dirt and oils fast and need extra attention.

DON’T: Rush the Process

Stay calm and go slow. Forcing your cat into a bath can lead to panic and make future grooming sessions more difficult. Not all cats take to baths right away so it may time (and bribes) to get your sphynx to tolerate them. Giving treats like Churu or other tube treats and adding fun floating toys in the water can make bath time more enjoyable.

DON’T: Use Harsh Products

Avoid products with essential oils, or human products. Always check labels or consult your vet if you’re unsure.

Bathing your Sphynx doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. With the right tools, a calm approach, and a consistent routine, your hairless companion will stay clean, comfortable, and oh-so-snuggly.
